Tudor Prince OysterDate service

This Tudor arrived after the owner had unfortunately dropped it onto a stone floor. The glass shattered and the watch no longer ran after the accident. The case and bracelet also had a few signs of wear from use. My first fear was a broken balance staff which can be a costly repair.

The clasp shows the usual marks any daily wearer inevitably picks up.

Fortunately in this case the balance was fine, the culprit was quickly found, a shard of glass under the dial was preventing the hour and minute wheels from meshing, causing the watch to stop.

After removing the glass shards the movement runs, a pre service trace is now possible. The balance amplitude is just 107 degrees. This is a sign of high friction in the movement meaning there is very poor power transfer from the mainspring to the balance wheel.

The answer will be a full service, fresh oils and a new mainspring. The beat error is very high meaning the watch is out of beat, possibly as a result of the shock damage.

The movement shows quite a lot of dirt inside. It was definitely time for a service.

The after service testing is much improved. The rate is perfect, no beat error means the escapement is properly centred where it runs most efficiently and the amplitude is over 300 degrees. We aim for at least 270 degrees after service so 316 is a very good result.

New seals are inserted with bergeon sealing grease to ensure the watch is water tight like any Oyster cased watch should be.

The watch is reunited with the refinished bracelet. The new glass looks great and the watch works well again.

The total cost of this repair was £290. If you have a similar watch which needs some attention please let us know.
